Auto Insurance Requirements in Virginia

Auto Insurance Requirements in Virginia

The minimum requirements for automobile insurance coverage in the state of Virginia falls in about the middle category when compared to the other forty nine states.

The bodily injury or death benefit requirement is twenty five thousand dollars for one person. This minimum requirement doubles for two or more persons. The fifty thousand dollar minimum required is the total amount that will be paid . So if there are two or more claimants then this amount must be divided among them.

The minimum property damage requirement of twenty housand dollars is applicable to each accident. It is the maximum amount that will be paid no matter how many claims are received for that particular accident.

There is always the option to purchase higher amounts of either requirement and there are many other options that can be added. The state of Virginia only enforces the minimum requirement, all other options are personal choices or ones that the purchaser can afford.

Every state has different requirements. Your insurance company or agent will quote you the basic minimum requirements if you ask.

If the accident was not your fault , then the other driver will be responsible. It only covers the other vehicles or properties involved, it does not cover your vehicle. The occupants of the other vehicle or the owner of the property that was damaged can make claims against you and your insurance company. Damages and so forth to your own vehicle must be paid by you.

There are some instances when certain things that happen to you are covered by a minimum policy but you must read the fine print in the policy documents and riders. to see what these are. If you don't fully inderstand them ask your agent to explain them. This might apply in the case of hitting a deer but you must know what is in the policy.

There are also special circumstances that may be covered if someone else was driving your car with your permission. Understanding the fine print is the only way you will know what's covered.
