In the State of Texas, there are required minimums for the amount of
automobile accident insurance one must have to operate a motor vehicle
within the state. The State of Texas does require minimum liability
insurance for all motorists.
The minimum liability coverage amounts are the amounts of $30,000
(thirty thousand dollars) for Bodily Injury Liability Coverage which is
for injuries incurred by one individual and $60,000 (sixty thousand
dollars) for injuries incurred by all individuals involved. The State
of Texas also requires $30,000 (thirty thousand dollars) for Property
Damage Coverage which is coverage for property damage as a result of
the automobile accident.
The State of Texas does not require motorists to obtain and have
Personal Injury Protection, or PIP, to operate a motor vehicle in the
state.
The State of Texas does not require individuals to obtain and have
Uninsured Motorist or Underinsured Motorist (UM or UIM) protection to
operate a motor vehicle within the State of Texas as well. As an
optional addition to coverage, Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist
coverage is separated into two parts: Uninsured and Underinsured
Motorist Bodily Injury Liability Coverage and Uninsured and
Underinsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Injury Liability Coverage covers
loss wages, medical expenses, pain and suffering, disfigurement and
permanent or partial disability as a result of the accident with an
uninsured or underinsured motorist. There is no deductible for this
service.
Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Property Damage pays for items
damaged in the accident, as well as pay for repairs of damage done to
the car and for a rental car. However, there is a $250 deductible.
All insurance companies are required to offer Uninsured and
Underinsured Motorist Coverage. If you do not want the additional
service, then the insurance company must have you decline in writing.
If you are leasing a vehicle, they will require you to obtain Collision
and Comprehensive Coverage. On owned vehicles, these are optional.
Collision Coverage covers the vehicle, regardless of fault.
Comprehensive Coverage covers all damage done to the vehicle outside of
a collision, including vandalism, theft and Acts of God.
