Missouri is in the top twenty populated states in The United States.
This state is located in the middle of the country and is considered to
be a crossroads to the west. The two largest cities in the state are
St. Louis and Kansas City. When regarding automobile insurance,
Missouri is considered to be a tort state. This means that every driver
must show proof of financial responsibility in the event of an
automobile accident.
Missouri residents have one of two ways in which they can show proof of
financial responsibilities for their automobiles. The first way is by
posting a bond or certificate of deposit for a minimum amount of
$120,000. The second way is by obtaining an automobile insurance policy
that meets the state’s minimum requirements. Most residents of Missouri
choose to purchase the automobile insurance policies.
The state’s minimum insurance policy requirements mandate that the
driver of the vehicle have bodily injury and property damage liability
insurance. The minimum requirements for bodily injury are $25,000 for
one individual or $50,000 for all injured parties. The property damage
liability part of the policy must cover a minimum of $10,000. Residents
are not required to cover comprehensive or collision insurance, however
many residents choose to do so. Residents can also have medical
payments added to their insurance policies as well.
The state of Missouri has stiff penalties for being caught driving
without insurance. People who are caught with proper insurance often
loose their driving privileges for a one year period. When they are
able to have their privileges reinstated they often have to pay a
reinstatement fee, along with providing proof of insurance. Most people
who have lost their privileges, in the state, are then required to
obtain a SR22 form from their insurance company. The SR22 form is then
required for a period of three years.
There are other reasons Missouri drivers should maintain insurance,
aside from the stiff penalties. St. Louis and Kansas City, both, have
high rates of automobile thefts. This is particularly true for sports
cars and other higher end vehicles. Maintaining the proper amount of
insurance helps keep drivers legal and their investments protected in
the event of a theft or break-in.
