Auto Insurance Requirements in Maine

Auto Insurance Requirements in Maine

The State of Maine requires that all automobile drivers have and carry a liability policy. All drivers must have a minimum limit of $50,000.00 for bodily injury per person. You must have a minimum limit of $100,000 for two or more people and $25,000.00 for property damage or a combined limit of $125,000.00. This coverage, covers injuries and damages suffered by other people that are caused by policyholders.

If you are in a Traffic accident and live in Maine the bodily injury compensates what the insured has caused due to the Traffic accident. Bodily Injury coverage also protects the policyholder for medical expenses, wage loss and pain and suffering. It will also compensate for family members who live with the policyholder (By law whomever lives in the home with the policyholder has to be listed on the policy) In the event that someone uses your automobile with your permission. Property damage liability covers damage done to another vehicle, fence or home caused by the policyholders vehicle. You should keep in mind that this type of coverage does not cover compensation to the insured for any injuries or property.

Motorist who live in the state of Maine must also have Uninsured and Underinsured coverage. This coverage covers for medical expenses for bodily injury in case the insured is hit by someone without coverage or does not have adequate coverage or is a victim of a hit and run. The Bureau of Insurance requires the limits be equal to the amount of liability the customer purchases. You could choose to purchase limits lower than your liability limits and a rejection must be handwritten on a special form that is given by the insurer before the effective date on the policy. Even though you can buy a lower limit of coverage the minimum can't be lower than $50,000.00 per person and $100,000.00 per accident.

Motorist must also carry Medical Payments on their policy as well. As of January 1, 2008 the policy must have Medical Payment coverage on their policy. This coverage covers medical espenses and funeral cost if the insured or family members if they are hurt while riding in the policyholders vehicle. This type of coverage also covers the policyholder or family members while walking or riding in another vehicle. This limit is quite low so therefore it may be wise to raise it unless you have medical insurance that covers this type of coverage.
