Auto Insurance Requirements in Iowa

Auto Insurance Requirements in Iowa

People who are relocating to Iowa need to research information regarding the state’s minimum insurance requirements. Iowa, like all states, requires it’s drivers to maintain automobile insurance on their vehicles. This state has many of the same requirements as other states, however it also has some requirements that are not seen in many other states.

The state of Iowa requires all drivers to maintain proof of financial responsibility of a minimum of $55,000. This requirement can be proved by one of two ways. The first way is to obtain automobile insurance by an insurance company that is licensed to do business in the state. The other option is for the individual to provide a deposit of $55,000 to the department of motor vehicles in the state. This deposit must be held for a period of two years. It can be provided in a number of ways including certified funds or a surety bond.

Drivers who obtain automobile insurance must maintain a required minimum amount of liability insurance. This liability insurance must be a minimum of $20,00 per person, or $40,000 per accident, for any bodily injuries that occur. The insurance policy must also cover a minimum $5,000 for any property damage that occurs in the result of an accident.

Unlike many states, Iowa does not require it’s drivers to maintain uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. However if a person is driving another individual’s automobile and is involved in an accident, both the driver and the owner must provide proof of current automobile insurance. This state also does not require personal injury coverage on the resident’s insurance policy like many other states require.

People who are moving to Iowa should know that all drivers in the state are required to show proof of current insurance if asked by a police officer. They should also be aware that winter conditions often make traveling on the roadways more hazardous during the winter months. Spring time flooding also causes hazards to drivers on Iowa’s roads.

When compared to the national average, prospective residents will be surprised of the state’s annual insurance premiums. In 2006 Iowa was ranked as having the lowest average annual premiums in the country.
