Auto Insurance Requirements in Wyoming

Before you can license a vehicle to drive in Wyoming, you have to satisfy the state's mandatory financial responsibility requirements. This means that you have to buy a policy or satisfy the requirements for covers three basic areas.

Bodily Injury Liability

If your accident causes injury or loss to anyone else, under Wyoming law you can be sued. With mandatory liability insurance, your auto insurance company will pay the claims and any legal costs it incurs in defending you. Your insurance must carry minimum limits of $25,000 for one person or $50,000 for bodily injury or death to two persons per accident.

Property Damage Liability.

$20,000 is the minimum that you must have to cover property damage of another entity when you are at fault in an accident. Your insurance company will pay up to that amount for each accident.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage.

Unless you reject the coverage in writing at the time you apply for insurance, uninsured motorist coverage will be included in your policy in Wyoming in the amount of $25,000 for bodily injury per peson and $50,000 per accident. In case of a hit and run driver or a driver who isn't covered by insurance, this coverage will pay those costs. It will not cover property damage and it does not protect the other driver, but it's only for your protection.

Wyoming follows a Tort System, which means that when an accident occurs, it must be determined which party is at fault, and that party is liable for the expenses and damages as outlined above. Because of this, it's usually recommended that you carry more than the minimum coverage set by the state.

You can exclude any drivers in your household from your insurance policy, which means that if they should be driving your car and get into an accident, they are not covered and your insurance will not pay for damages.

If your auto insurance lapses, your insurance company is required to notify the Wyoming Department of Motor Vehicles immediately and if it's determined that you do not have insurance, you will have your driver's license suspended. To reinstate it, you must give them proof of insurance and $50.
