| Similar to every other state in America, Ohio has certain requirements
which must be met in order to legally operate a vehicle within the
state. These requirements are fairly straightforward, and are the
minimum amount of insurance protection. If you so choose, you can vote
to have more extensive coverage placed on your automobile.
Ohio state law requires that each driver has a minimum of $12,500 per
person, and $25,000 per accident coverage in Bodily Injury Liability
insurance. Bodily Liability Insurance is divided up into three
sections: medical bills, wage loss, and pain and suffering. If the
innocent party experiences symptoms falling under any of those three
categories, your Bodily Injury Liability will reimburse the costs.
Property Damage Coverage insurance is also required, with a minimum
amount of $7500 to cover potential damage to another person's property
as a result of a vehicular accident. Keep in mind that Property Damage
is not strictly limited to another person's vehicle; this type of
coverage also protects buildings, possessions, fences, light posts, and
more.
In addition, Tort Option Coverage is also required. A Tort System
mandates that one person must be held responsible for an accident, and
that the guilty party and their insurance will pay for the damages and
liability. Each Tort System varies from state to state.
While not legally necessary, it is recommended to purchase
Uninsured/Underinsured motorist insurance, as this will protect you and
your vehicle in a case where the guilty party does not have insurance,
or the expenses exceed the limits of their coverage.
Many insurance agencies will provide you with a package consisting of
the minimum coverage allowed by state. Your insurance agent will know
your state regulations and rules, and will be able to help you
customize your auto insurance depending on your budget and your
concerns. In addition, your Ohio insurance agent will help you choose
certain options specific to the driving hazards in your area. Discuss
with your insurance agent how your policy treats accidents caused from
snow or black ice on the road, and whether you are considered at fault
for these types of unavoidable accidents. |
