| The "Live free or die" State has a very liberal policy for insurance on
your automobile, so liberal, in fact that the average New Hampshire
resident, needs no insurance coverage at all.
If you have a clean driving record, with no DUI's, and your car is not
financed, you can register your car with no proof of insurance.
According to New Hampshire Statute RSA 264, you are not required to
carry auto iinsurance, but you "must be able to demonstrate that you
are able to provide sufficient funds to
meet New Hampshire Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility Requirements in the event of an “at-fault” accident."
If you do not meet these requirements, your license may be suspended by the state.
If you have been convicted of DUI, then you are required to carry SR-22
insurance for at least 3 years after that conviction, and if you are
convicted of a second DUI, then there is an additional 5 years coverage
required.
During the time you have the SR-22 coverage, if you are convicted of a
major crime, then you are required to carry the insurance for an
additional 3 years from the time of that conviction.
New Hampshire residents with a vehicle financed, are almost always
required by the lender to carry full coverage incurance, which includes
Liability (pays for damages to other vehicles for which you are legally
liable) Collision (pays for damages due to contact with another vehicle
or object)and Comprehensive (pays for damage that occurs for reasons
other than a collision).
Those who opt to be responsible and insure thier vehicle, do have a few insurance laws to follow.
According to New Hampshire Statutes, NH RSA 264:16, when you buy insurance for our vehicle,
you are also required to purchase Medical Payments Coverage. By law,
you must buy at least $1,000 of Medical Payments Coverage. additionally
