Auto Insurance Requirements in Louisiana

Louisiana Law states that you must have Liability Coverage on every vehicle that you own. This Coverage covers property damages or personal injury that you are legally responsible for if you are at fault in an accident. Louisiana Law states that you have to have $10,000.00 for bodily injury to one person, $20,000.00 for than one person in a single motor vehicle accident and $10,000.00 for property damage to some elses vehicle or property.

If you are in an accident in Louisiana, Liability Coverage, covers you, your family members and others if they have permission to drive your vehicle. You and your family members are covered when driving someone else's vehicle as well. Rental Cars are also covered, but Company Vehicles are not covered.

You can purchase other Coverages also, such as Medical Payments Coverage. Which covers medical expenses for a period of time after your accident. This type of Coverage also covers funeral cost. The Coverage pays out regardless of whose fault it is. The Medical Payment covers you and any passenger who is in your vehicle at the time of the accident.

Another type of Coverage that you can purchase in Louisiana is Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage. This type of coverage, pays for your vehicle if you are in an accident with someone who has no insurance or limited insurance. These covers any bodily injury to you or any passengers who suffers from an injury from an accident caused by another driver. If there is a disinterested witness to a hit and run accident, The accident may be covered. You can choose to purchase uninsured motorist economic only coverage. This is the same coverage as under-insured accept that it covers only the cost of injuries to you and the passengers in your vehicle. Pain and suffering are not included in this Coverage.

The other type of Insurance Coverage is Underinsured and uninsured property damage coverage. This type of coverage pays for your property damage if the other driver has no insurance or not enough insurance. There is a a $250.00 deductible with this policy and the recovery limit is $10,000.00 or the cash value of your vehicle. If you have colision insurance this type of coverage is not availible to you.
