Auto Insurance Requirements in Hawaii

The Laws in Hawaii requires that you must have insurance throughout the registration period of your vehicle and that you carry a valid Insurance identification card in your vehicle at all times.

If you do not have Automobile Insurance you must submit your registration certificate and liscense plates to the Deparentment of Moter Vehicles. After, you submit them you will not be able to drive your vehicle.

Hawaii is a "No-Fault" state which means your Insurance Company will pay your bills for any injuries you or any passengers have up to your "PIP" Limit. "PIP" means: Personal Injury protection benefits. "No-Fault" also means you cannot be sued or sue unless you or your passenger has a serious injury. "No-Fault" applies to injuries only, it does apply to personal property. The person who is at fault is responsible for personal property and damage to the vehicle. "No-Fault" coverage in Hawaii only covers bodily injury.

The minimum Insurance policy must have protection for you and any passengers for $10,000.00 per person. This is for medical and rehabilitative services only. The coverage must also cover $20,000.00 per person / $40,000.00 per accident for bodily injury liability. These covers damage if you are at fault in an accident.

You can be ticketed and fined up to $500.00 if you do not have proper Insurance Coverage for your vehicle. You can be ticketed or fined up to $500.00 for not showing proof of Insurance Coverage.

Of course you can purchase optional coverage which includes, collision and comprehensive, uninsured and under-insured, wage loss, alternative care or healing methods such as acupuncture and faith healing, death benefits, funeral benefits and PIP deductible and PIP managed care. You have the right to decline uninsured motorist coverage in writing or you can purchase $20,000.00 per person uninsured motorist coverage, which will pay for serious injury or death if the person at fault does not have insurance.
